Tuesday

Kay came to pick me up.

I was dressed in a pair of jeans and a soft turtleneck in my favorite teal color. Warm and comfy. I leaned over and kissed the top of Twinkles head. “It’s been a weird day.”

He rolled his eyes up so he could look at me.

“Did you have fun with Auntie Kay?”

The little stump of his tail waggled.

“He was a very good boy,” she said coming to a stop at the stop sign. “I think the lawyers liked having him there, too.”

“Dog lovers?” I asked.

“I think it was more that he has an intimidation factor that they appreciated.”

I reached back to rub his fur. “You intimidating? Aww, you’re nothing but a sweetie.”

He lolled a moist tongue out and closed his eyes by way of response. He’d had a big day, what with visiting his aunt at work and eating three of the heart attack burgers that we had picked up on the way to the bar.

Kay pulled into a spot right in front of Hooch’s. “Lights not on,” she said.

“Justice had a project to do. She’s coming in late. Joe’s probably in the back.” I noticed a piece of paper taped to my front door. “Or he left me a note saying he’s not coming. I don’t read Hungarian though.”

We piled out.

I pulled the note down: It’s MINE. Give it to me or there will be consequences.

Kay was reading over my shoulder.

“Stromboli?” I asked.

“Hard to tell,” Kay said. “Do you think he’d use Comic Sans as a threat font?”

“He wants my bar. I don’t know what anyone else would want from me.”

She waggled her head back and forth like she was weighing an idea. “Could it be Ashley?”

“Does she refer to Connor as ‘it’?” I asked, eyebrows raised high.

“Yeah, no. That isn’t right. She wouldn’t say that.”

I unlocked the door, flipped on the light and pulled out my phone.

Me: Got a weird note on Hooch’s front door. Sounds like a threat.

Dick: I’m getting off now. Can it wait a half-hour?

Me: Is that your normal recovery time? As I remember you used to bounce right back.

Dick: What?

Dick: Ah, got it. To be honest BJ, it feels like so long ago that probably back then I did have a quicker recovery time. In this case, nothing sexy or fun. Quick errand, and I’ll head your way.

“Dick sounds cranky.” I slipped my phone into my back pocket.

“His time of the month?”

I smiled.

Kay wrinkled her nose. “I think it might be that he isn’t getting any. He knows that as soon as he hooks up with another girl, he goes on your off-limits list.”

“He’s a detective. He’s already on my off-limits list.” I stuck the key in the door and turned the knob.

“But he’s hopeful.”

“Mrph.” I looked down to see she had a paper bag in her hands. “What’s in there?”

“I’m going to set up a new vignette for the Gnome on the Roam.” She sat down on a bar stool and opened her bag. She pulled out a sheet of paper covered with song lyrics.
